So, into another New Year we went, leaving some great times, and good memories of 2006, but not forgetting the turbulent times which also included those damn changes to the visa regulations! This was shortly followed by the military coup and to round 2006 off, small explosions throughout the BANG-kok Metropolis. But with the fighting spirit of your average holidaymaker, The Penthouse Hotel and Kitten Club refused to let this affect us, and so 2007 (which promises to be better than the previous) began……
Once again ‘The Powers that be’ in their infinite wisdom, have decided to impose some tough and xenophobic property laws to close the loophole on the very foreign realty investment which turned this former fishing village into the International resort it is known today. No longer can a foreigner set up a nominee company with six silent native partners in order to acquire property, as all parties now have to prove their investment. The minimum actual capital should now be no less than three million baht ($86,000) and the company must make a significant annual profit (which means paying corporate / personal tax & work permit?) in order to remain. If this all sounds too difficult, you can still purchase a condominium in your own name so long as the money comes from abroad and an additional thirty percent of the value is deposited in a Thai bank interest free for a year! However, the condominium building must not be over forty nine per cent foreign owned and the location can only be in certain provinces. Failing to comply with any of these regulations may result in force of sale of the property within 180 days by the land office (it is anyone’s guess as to what may happen to property prices especially when coupled with the new visa rules!)
“Gung Hei Fat Choy” – no I’m not being rude, just wishing you “Congratulations and be prosperous” throughout ‘The Golden Year of the Pig’, Honk! Honk! This is always a lively event in the Pattaya calendar and no more so than this year. The ‘Chinese New Year Extravaganza’ celebrations commenced on 16th of this month and consisted of a full three-day’s worth of attractions and events including cultural performances, talent contests, eating competitions, ceremonies and concerts alongside numerous fire-crackers and all centered on Bali Hai Pier. The Penthouse Hotel and Kitten Club staff join to wish all our patrons and friends, a Safe, Happy, Prosperous and Healthy New Year – “May the fortitude and great honesty of the Pig be with you!”
This month also featured the latest edition of the ultimate entertainment guide magazine ‘After Dark.’ This full colour monthly edition features all the best venues in the Pattaya / Bangkok vicinities and will soon accept worldwide subscriptions. The newly formed monthly ‘Full Moon Party’ on the sands of Koh Larn Island has recently undergone a name change and is now known as ‘Dance on the Beach Party’. Boasting European DJs, foam parties, laser shows, house, trance and various other genres and exhibits it is becoming popular with all age groups so, - “Take your kitten(s) with you and make it a night to remember!” The shuttle service from Bali Hai Pier, Pattaya Beach, runs from 6 – 9pm and then 1 – 4am and tickets start at around 600 THB (for the standard shuttle service) and beyond (if you wish to include drinks or become a member of the VIP Enclosure). Tickets are available throughout Pattaya Resort.

There is also, just one ‘open forum’ online board that has come to our notice whose sole intent has been to promote their own establishment by libeling other bars and hotels. This type of practice can only be described as unprofessional and unethical and will surely damage the perpetrators themselves in the long run. There is a Pattaya adage, ‘what goes around comes around’… We do not condone this type of unscrupulous behaviour and will play no part in its continuance ……
The newly opened and much publicized Suvarnabhumi Airport is reporting record tourist arrivals and as a result the former Bangkok Airport of Don Muang is set to re-open on 25th March to offset around 25% (77 flights per day) of the non connecting domestic travel. Suvarnabhumi airport has added to its already documented list of woes, the label, as one disgruntled tourist belated, “a den of thieves”. Caution is advised, especially when arriving with duty free cigarettes over the allocated allowance as this may not only delay your arrival into the Kingdom but could greatly add to your expenses (often 500 GBP) with confiscation besides! In short, just be more careful than usual and follow the advice that is sent out to those requesting an airport pick-up – be it ‘Taxi’, … ‘Limo’ (NEW Honda Accord), … Space Wagon, … Mini Bus, or for those demanding something very special indeed, The ‘Champagne X Privacy’……! Please note, with the Champagne and Space Wagon services, all road tolls are included. On a brighter note, it has been reported to us that the departure tax is now included in the price of your ticket so there should be just enough left for a couple of beers and an airport souvenir!
As we head into the hottest part of the year and towards the annual water festival of ‘Songkran’ it becomes ever more a scramble to find suitable and available accommodation over this period. With most hotels already fully booked may we suggest that you book well in advance and for those booking on-line (www.penthousehotel.com) “Reservations” this is not so much of a problem, and is certainly the future of hotel procurement …… including airport transfer. The renowned ‘Hot Season’ is an ideal period for sunbathing and island excursions, and when it gets a little too hot to handle, take refuge in the refreshing cool comforts of the numerous nightclubs and indulge in a spot of 'bird watching' – makes the beer taste better!).
The Penthouse Hotel just keeps getting better and seeing is truly believing! As usual our rooms continue to upgrade, yet never so much as in the past twelve months. Although every room is different, all share the same impeccable attention to detail, unique facilities and an identity that sets these suites apart from all the rest. Our vegetarian section has recently been expanded and in the interests of our customers, and as a precaution due to the lingering and now reappearing bird flu, chicken is still off our menu. We also do not allow any MSG (monosodium glutamate and a native specialty) to be added to any of our ingredients. “Delicious and nutritious ……”
As the New Year passed into the distance, ‘Simply the Best’ nightclub in town, the adjoining ‘Kitten Club’, moved into the future. This established and exciting day / night spot just keeps getting better! The new DJ Booth is now operational and rocks the house while sporting the very latest computer generated sound / visual correlation experience. The recently completed party size Jacuzzi Whirlpool, with its technically advanced full spec lighting / spa arrangement, has become a very popular attraction in the Club and takes on a whole new dimension with our ‘Dancing Girls’ with both guys and dolls alike sharing the bubbles! And to mimic that ‘Monroe posture’ there are remote controlled air vents located throughout the dance podiums. News has spread fast around the Pattaya community about the goings-on in the Jacuzzi / Club and more lively parties are now the order of the day ………… or should I say night?! We’ve recently installed two super size flat screen televisions that adorn both sides of the club featuring live action of the club and the latest sports events. These were thankfully in place just in time to watch the Thai / Singapore Asian Cup Final in which the Thai team was defeated 3-2 on aggregate.
The fun starts each afternoon with our early bird (3.30pm - 7.00pm) ‘Happy Hour’ featuring the ever popular ‘TWO FOR ONE’ / ‘BUY ONE 1, GET 1 FREE’ drinks offer and extends into the evening with the usual complimentary bar snacks and frequent shows, draws, bar hosts, and of course the receptive Kitty / Coyote hostesses and table-top dancers who will always keep you happily occupied! The enjoyment continues with our ever-popular pool contests that are held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday night – with all types of nationalities adding to the atmosphere and spice of the evening. And each fun –packed week rounds off with our Saturday FREE ‘Pig Roast’ and Sunday FREE ‘Beef Stew & Chili Con Carne Buffet’ making the Club’s anthem “Simply the best’’ ring ever so true!!! Just like old times!
We have also witnessed some ‘newly born’ Kittens arriving in the Club which alone has been enough to get the blood pumping and raise the pressure of many a patron and even causing some mild heart palpitations and deeply concerned nurses. Needless to say, even some of our most seasoned punters have thrown out the Viagra or at least abstained for the time being! And with the advent of our truly special 'Valentines Party and Buffet', Cupid was kept busy throughout the night!
And if you’re still looking for a ‘splash’, …… then why not hold a pool party with a few friends in Asia’s largest, most exotic Jacuzzi / Spa / Swimming pool along with Swings, Slides, TVs and on tap drinks served on demand - just what the doctor ordered after a long haul journey! Sections of the bar with or without Whirlpool / Jacuzzi are available for private functions as indeed is the entire ‘Kitten Club’ for a great one nighter! Simply the Best! With hindsight …… 2006 proved to be a particularly successful year for The Penthouse Hotel and Kitten Club, however ‘Freelancers’, generally run by unscrupulous minders with separate agendas, turned out to be our biggest headache with too many instances of monetary loss and abuse to be documented. “Yes” … there are certainly no ‘free rides’ and our internal security continues to insist on checking the validity of ‘overnight guests’ for the safety of our Hotel friends and patrons and additional security measures have been implemented …… We have also increased the number of ‘Kittens’ to be found in the Club to circumvent many of these problems. In a changing world, personal safety is becoming ever more necessary and with this in mind both personnel and equipment have been expanded.
Check out our long awaited and more representative room photographs (about time!) which finally do justice to the suites. The previous images were some ten years old and did not reflect the many improvements and additions made over the years.
